It is funny when I realize that I have spent more than 5 years in serving companies. I remember when I had graduation, I do planned to have a job but only for 1 – 2 years. At that time, the passion to learn, know at something is such a big obsession. I was often envy at those who was able to continue their study without thinking about tuition fee, living cost, etc. Yes, scholarship was there actually, but my mistake was to had a thought that scholarship will be there for long period (since now, European country that previously gave a free tuition fee, now is starting to give a certain amount of euro to the international student).
The funny thing for me is, I have never thinking to work in companies this far. I do enjoy things that I am doing right now, and honestly this is more challenging instead of learning in a class . Since technology is rapidly changing and class room most likely won’t be able to cover all of them. The thing that comes into me now is about where am I heading to? Some of my friends have earned their graduate degree, although some of them have also decided to have a job, just like me. I am now still in the phase of finding a right path for my future. Yes it is a bit late, I know. I should have decided this few years back.
Anyway, 5 years was a noticeable time for me. Had a lot of new things, and it was good and nice to have. I guess for the time being, experience is the reward since I haven’t decided a clear goal to be achieved.

Spine and Chiropractic

I’m having spine therapy lately. Ok, let me introduce you with the background as this might be confusing when I go straight to the explanation.
I have slight pain around my spine. It’s kind of stiffness in the neck down to the shoulder, this is my first issue. The other problem is near the hip, normally known as low back problem. The pain appears for both standing too long or sitting more than an hour.
So, i visited orthopaedist couple times, but to be honest it does not solve the root pain. The drugs have reduced the pain, but it pop-up again after couple days. I tried to seek the solution in several forums related to the spine, and found out that chiropractic might be a solution.
After digging more regarding the chiropractic, I decided to go to one of the chiropractic clinic in Jakarta. I brought the X-ray with me. The X-ray covers 2 parts of the spine, Cervical and Lumbar. The chiropractor (the guy that does chiropractic), give some initial findings after see the X-Ray. He said in general my spine is quite good; it is in a good shape and has no significant issue as shown in the X-ray. However, some abnormal forms of the spine have been seen from the X-ray. Just want to let you know, that both orthopaedist and chiropractor and other spine related clinic does really care with the structure/shape of your spine. So, they might seen something just based on the X-ray (sometimes need MRI as well). Back to the result, according to the chiropractor, there are 2 main issues can be mapped into my 2 stiffness. The first one is around the neck; my cervical spine has pretty straight shape while it should be curved with some normal degree range. This can cause my neck pain. The second issue is the low back pain which is the L5 issue. Chiropractor has seen that my L5 is slightly smaller than other lumbar spine segment. This might be an issue and can cause lower back pain. So based on these two findings I am now undergoing the adjustment therapy.
With some exercise given, I feel much better now. Besides, my posture is slightly improved. I can stand quite straight and sitting in a good position. I will go more detail with the chiropractic later on. My point with what has been described above is, be care with your spine, always! Pay attention with the way you sit and the way you stand as this can destruct your spine gradually. I have seen many spine cases and it does painful and annoying. You can’t do much activity nor exercise with the spine problem. You can find many examples about the recommended sitting and standing position, as well as sleeping in the forum. Meaning, in all positions, you need to be kind with the spine. Rule of the thumb is tried to have your ear down to the centre of hip at one straight line. By having this continuously, you are also exercising your surrounding muscles to support your spine in a good shape.

hati saya berduka mendengar dan melihat bencana alam yang baru saja terjadi.
gempa dan tsunami di mentawai, meletusnya gunung merapi. lupakan sebentar banjir yang kemarin melanda jakarta, ada ratusan orang yang lebih menderita disana.
saya bisa sedikit merasakan, bagaimana kegelisahan mereka pada saat orang yang mereka kasihi hilang, ataupun kesedihan mereka saat melihat tubuh yang terbaring tapi tak bernyawa.
saya pun bisa sedikit ber-empati, kekhawatiran para anggota keluarga yang jauh dari tempat musibah.
dalam hati, saya berharap dan berdoa, semoga mereka yang sedang menghadapi musibah diberikan kekuatan dan ketabahan, dan kiranya banyak orang yang boleh tergerak hatinya untuk membantu, dari hanya sekedar berkomentar dan mencaci kemacetan karena banjir.

Since throughput has always been an interesting part for those who work in networking, then let’s write about this in a brief.
From the unit, which is bit per second, we may guess that throughput simply means number/amount of bit transferred from one starting-point to the end-point in duration of 1 second. This terminology is almost the similar (although has different meaning) as when we learned about frequency (in contrary of periodicity) in pendulum sample, which is number of swing from one point back to this point in a second. So, when we read 1 bps, meaning it able to send 1 bit information in 1 second from one point to another end-point, according to this definition. I would say, this is not false but too simple to be understood in the real environment.
Mathis equation has defined the throughput performance and what are the main factors that affect its performance. This equation is done in a paper called “The macroscopic behavior of the TCP congestion avoidance algorithm”, so please be aware that the test was done with TCP sample. The equation is given in relation with Maximum-Segment-Size, Round-Trip-Time and also Loss-Probability in the given end-to-end chain, as follow:
Rate < (MSS/RTT)*(1 / sqrt(p))
This is interesting, since Mathis has correlated 3 main factors that important to the end-to-end throughput. Of course the node processing from application down to physical layer should be covered, but I guess this will be very complex parameter to be put in 1 equation. In one of the chart, it is found that TCP loss has the biggest impact to the throughput calculation. The chart shows even less than 1% TCP loss will extremely decrease the capability of the network to send the information. The second parameter is RTT, again this is related to the buffering, ack, re-fragmentation of the chunked packet. The higher RTT you have, the smaller number of Bytes you will receive. Last but still have important role is related to negotiated MSS between those two end-points. However, to get the correlation between MSS and throughput is a bit headache. I was able to see the correlation between throughput and tcp loss as well as RTT, but not with MSS, although theoretically it has inline relation, meaning the bigger MSS you get, more bytes you will have in a certain duration (with an assumption that pipe is always dimensioned large enough to cope with the user-requested-throughput). I’m wondering how it would be for mobile-broadband network. Since at least it uses 2 type of network, wire-line and wireless. Does this equation still valid?

something strange with my brain, i cannot recall many small things. i guess this is what is called as short-term memory loss. i hope this won’t be an impact of the rest, or kind of any memory issues. i have tried harder to get my brain back to normal. although this has no big impact to me, but it is really annoying. I’m kind of stupid person, because even to use one idiom when I’m in conversation is difficult.
