IT and Telecommunication has its own way of work. I’d like to write it down, just want to compare those two interesting fields based on my 2++ years experience work in IT company and almost 2 months work in Telco company. So please, don’t make it too serious, because you might have different opinion with mine.
1. Different number of node/device/box types
You might find more type of devices in telco network/infrastructure, since IP is only used as its transport (if they are using “over IP”). That’s why, in my opinion, it is really difficult to be a real expert and have deep knowledge in all part of telecommunication fields, because you are not just facing router, switch, and firewall, but other things like, sgsn, ggsn, rnc, rbs, msc, mgw, etc.
2. Statistic and log
Statistic and log is something that really important in telco network. When i was in IT company, log file is only seen when the problem is occured, and we try to troubleshoot the problem based on the log. Compared to telco, we need to look at the log very detail. It is common to monitor it each hours, and find out whether something suspicious is happening or not.
The other thing is statistic, you can earn more money from this part. Why? because operator needs to monitor their network performance as detail as they can to improve it. Of course, it is not just graphical report, because if they do so, OSS should be enough, right?
3. Terminology, parameter, and acronym
In telco, there are so many terminologies, parameters, and acronyms, for example, interfaces in GPRS network are named differently, depends on the connected node, e.g gi,gn,iu,gy,gx,gr,etc. This part is the difficult one, and i think IP is much more perceivable.
4. Information availability in internet
If you are confusing in IT technologies, just go to google, and mostly you will find it very quick. It is different with telco, you cannot find anything in google. It because sometimes the technology just like vendor propietary although it is given in a standard documentation.
5. Acceptability in terms of device restart
In IT, device restart is sometime acceptable for maintance, and usually it is done during out of the peak hours. In telco, it is also acceptable if you restart the node, but it is problem when you do it in core node, since it will have major impact. Not just user will experiencing bad connection, but it will impact to other node somehow, and makes the problem wider if it is not handled immediately.
